Hurricane Harvey hit Houston, Tx, August, 2017. No one knew the magnitude of the storm or how much it would impact our city on a grand level. I remember seeing all the warnings on the news and thinking that it wasn’t going to be a big deal. People were just blowing it out of proportion. I also remember that the day before Harvey hit, we had a birthday party for Levi. He was turning one, so my mind was distracted.
The next day, early in the morning, I walked outside and took a look at the sky. It was so clear and calm that I couldn’t imagine what would transpire in the hours to come. Call me crazy, but I heard Holy Spirit tell me, “It’s going to flood all around you, but you will be ok.” And I believed him. I told my husband what I heard and I told him to get some groceries because this thing was going to hit, but that we were going to be ok. So, he went off to the store. The rest is history. A lot of people were impacted by this storm and to this day trying to recover and move forward.
2019 for many of us was like that storm. Unexpected turn of events. From divorce, health problems, family issues, financial difficulties, and even loss of a loved one. It left us feeling blind sided, stunned, and paralyzed. Just like me, you probably tried to make sense of it all and tried processing it different ways but ended up with the same conclusion, how did this happen? And where did it come from?
So what do you do when something like that rocks your world? You first start to access the damage. What can be saved and what needs to be thrown out. What is a priority and what isn’t anymore. You start to take to account what is worth keeping and what is worth letting go. For some of us it’s our pride, our ego. For some of us its people pleasing. Putting things into perspective and what is a priority now. You see what’s of value and what matters most. Now you are careful of what you put in and what you put out.
Storms come to clear debris. Storms show us that we are stronger than what we think. Storms take us out of our comfort zone. Storms forces us to ask for help. You realize what’s important in your life and pushes everything else aside. You now know where your focus and energy should be placed. You no longer feel the need to hold on to things that you know will cost you your peace or compromise who you are, your morals, or beliefs.
“When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.” Isaiah 43:2
HE IS WITH YOU. Not my words but his words. HE IS WITH YOU.
2019 did bring devastation to my family but it also taught me to trust and rest in God. Truly rest in him and know that everything would be ok, not because of anything that I did but of who God is. After I came to that realization that God was with me and for me, I promise you, I did not lose any sleep. I can trust Him. I can rest in Him. He is my rock, He never changes. Never fails.
If you look back on the things that should’ve killed you or broken you, than you know that you’ll be ok no matter what life brings. God is with you and He promises to never leave you nor forsake you.
Times will come where the waves of life will try to overwhelm you. God never said they won’t come but He does say He will be with you. And you can take that to the bank!
I don’t know what you went through last year or even the years before, but I know that you will be ok. Put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ. Call out to him, “Then call on me when you are in trouble, and I will rescue you, and you will give me glory.” Psalm 50:15.
Maybe you need to let your pride down and ask God for help. You tried doing things your way, so how is that working out for you? I promise you that your life will never be the same. You can trust him. You don’t have to face life alone. With Jesus you are never alone.
I pray that whatever you are facing, you are reminded that you will never be alone. No storm is bigger than the God who created the universe. The God who promises to be with you. The God who loves you and sent His one and only son to die for you.
God is with you and everything will be ok!
